2 MINUTES AGO: Mexico Just SHUT DOWN The Panama Canal!
Some have referred to the Panama Canal as the greatest engineering achievement in human history. It’s also been dubbed the greatest liberty mankind has ever stolen from Mother Nature, which is perhaps a less flattering description. These days, less than half of the ships that used to be able to pass through the Canal can do so because of climate change, which is making the Canal dry up. Likewise, it is also threatened by Mexico’s new interoceanic corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
Hey, guys! Welcome back to my channel. Today, we will dive deep into how the well-known Panama Canal is about to be replaced by Mexico’s interoceanic corridor.

Let’s explore first the rise and fall of one of the “Seventh Wonders of the World” and considered the “Monument of the Millenium” – The Panama Canal.
Thousands of laborers toiled in the rain and mud in the steaming jungles of Central America in the early 1900s, attempting to split Panama in half so that it could connect the Pacific and Caribbean seas. But the hard, horrible task went beyond just dynamiting and digging. In the beginning, working on the Panama Canal meant just getting by.
Despite all the innovative technical achievements made in building the Panama Canal, which is recognized as one of the seven Modern World Wonders by the American Society of Civil Engineers, the most crucial decision was one that involved more human interaction than mechanical work.
Up to 22,000 laborers may have perished during the French attempts to excavate the canal. Malaria and yellow fever were both very common. Accidents at work that killed and wounded people. When the Americans took over the position in 1903, about eighty percent of the labor force was in exile.
The first task of renowned engineer John Frank Stevens upon his arrival in 1905 was to put an end to the slaughter. And that required embracing the relatively recent notion that mosquito control—a strategy supported by the U.S. Army physician William Crawford Gorgas would increase worker safety.
“Men of that era couldn’t conceive of a mosquito being able to kill a strong man. They just couldn’t respect that,” claims J. David Rogers, a Missouri University of Science & Technology professor of geological engineering. “The thing you had to conquer to make that project work was the sanitation issues.”
Under Gorgas’ supervision and Stevens’ directions, swamplands were drained and grasslands near workers were cut to eliminate mosquitoes. Pesticides were applied. The workspace was screened. Adult mosquitoes were caught. Quinine was given to the men. As a result, yellow fever was virtually eliminated in the region. Likewise, the number of deaths from malaria in the general population decreased from a maximum of 16.21 per 1,000 in July 1906 to 2.58 per 1,000 in December 1909, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The engineering marvel that came next was made possible by that medicinal triumph.
So, why the Panama Canal was built?
