With his early policy announcements, Joe Biden has been making a point of going hard into green, renewable energy which is specifically directed at the electric vehicles market. Biden is looking far into the future right now, and he has come up with a bold vision that America can get back on top of the automobile industry by shifting to electric cars made in the USA.
As part of his administration’s broader climate change strategy, President Joe Biden has made investing in electric vehicles a major focus of his infrastructure proposal. So, to turn his vision into reality, President Biden has recently passed a bill called “Build Back Better” and if it gets accepted then it would the most transformative government investment in the climate crisis ever. However, according to Musk it may not be such a good idea. During a conference of CEOs Musk said that Tesla team was not even really paying attention to negotiations in Washington, and he said that he would scrap the bill altogether:
“I would say can this bill, don’t pass it. That’s my recommendation. If this bill happens or doesn’t happen, we don’t think about it at all really. Honestly it might be better if the bill doesn’t pass.”
The “Build Back Better” Act, which passed in the House and is now in the Senate, includes a tax incentive of $12,500 for vehicles built by auto union members, and a $7,500 federal credit for Tesla which was discontinued two years ago. Tesla car buyers have not received any subsidies in the past two years however, even in this situations its introduction of electric vehicles has been very successful. Musk also expressed his opinion and said that all subsidies should be eliminated.
However, critics were quick to point out that Musk has been benefiting from billions of dollars in government subsidies to get his various ventures off the ground. According to Tristan Snell:
“Elon Musk is butt-hurt that Tesla is not getting as many electric car subsidies as Ford and GM (who have union workforces, unlike Tesla). So, he’s whining that no one should get subsidies. That’s all this is.”
