The Russian Luna 25 spacecraft was launched to the Moon from the Vostochny cosmodrome at 23:10 UTC on August 10, 2023, using a Soyuz-2.1b rocket and a Fregat-M upper stage. The previous spacecraft, Luna 24, was launched by the Soviet Union in 1976. This is the first mission to investigate the Earth satellite built by the Russian Federation. Whether or not this spacecraft can achieve a soft landing close to the Moon’s south pole will determine the entire future of Russia’s lunar mission.
It wasn’t necessary to wait that long between Luna 24 and Luna 25. To investigate the inner structure of the Moon, Russia has been developing the Luna-Globe program since the 1990s. It featured orbiters, landing stations, lunar rovers, penetrators (shock probes that had to be implanted into the lunar soil at three or four sites at a fast speed), and penetrators at various periods. The program was also frequently modified. Getting the mission ready for launch in 2013 was the original intention.
It was decided to concentrate on the research of the polar areas of the Moon after the Russian Lunar Exploration Neutron Detector (LEND) onboard the American Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) revealed the existence of water in the lunar soil. But given that it was intended to be produced on the same platform and contain some comparable design solutions, several scholars draw attention to the fact that the Luna-Globe project was changed following the Fobos-Grunt failure in 2011.
The ambitious plan was to send up a number of spacecraft, starting with a tiny lander that would touch down close to the Moon’s south pole and analyze soil samples there. Until recently, the leadership of Roscosmos and the spacecraft’s designers did not hesitate to acknowledge that the mission’s primary goals will be to develop fundamental soft landing technologies and, secondarily, to study the Moon’s south pole. The mission’s designation, Luna 25, was given to it in 2013, making it appear as though the Soviet lunar program was still in operation.
The new device was developed by NPO Lavochkin, which had previously produced Soviet lunar landers and orbiters, while the research payload was handled by the Space Research Institute.
Considering the successes of the Soviet lunar program, Luna 25 is a very simple spacecraft. Its scientific instruments only make up 30 kilos of its total mass of 615 kilograms without fuel. On the top of the device, the payload is mostly concentrated.
It has nine science instruments and is heated by a RITEG during the moon night. Its nine instruments perform the following functions:
Calculating the elemental and isotopic makeup of the upper layer of the polar regolith at the landing region at a depth of up to 40 centimetres, as well as estimating the mass fraction of water in the lunar soil.
