The United States scored as low as 67 out of a possible 100 in the annual Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), down from a high of 76 in 2015. The index uses a range of sources to measure the perceived amount of public sector corruption because corruption is by its very nature impossible to document. The corruption is worse when the score is lower.
The average score for the 180 nations and territories that were part of the 2020 index was below 50, which was achieved by two-thirds of them.The United States’ decreasing ranking was attributed in large part, according to Scott Greytak, the advocacy director for Transparency International’s US office, to a general “decay” in the nation’s political institutions.
Gretyak stated that propaganda and record-breaking quantities of untraceable money spent on elections in the United States have undermined public faith in those elections—especially in 2020, when those amounts were doubled compared to 2016.He cited a joint investigation by BuzzFeed News and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists that revealed how major banks had knowingly allowed trillions of dollars’ worth of questionable financial transactions to go forward, enabling drug kingpins, and increasingly important, are these series of really bombshell exposés by media outlets that are demonstrating how much dirty money is flowing into the United States’ financial system.
The 2020 index also demonstrated how national efforts to safeguard the public’s health and their economies in the midst of the epidemic have been hampered by widespread corruption. Defense contractors, the renowned fast food restaurant Shake Shack, and the Los Angeles Lakers are just a few of the companies that have benefited from loans made under the Payment Protection Program in the United States, which was created to help small businesses.The COVID-19 crisis is more than just a health and financial one. The problem is one of corruption.

However, even those at the CPI’s top need to seriously confront how they contribute to both domestic and international corruption.Corruption has long been a threat to the delivery of healthcare and the purchase of medications. Regardless of levels of economic development, the survey revealed that the less money was spent on health care, the more corrupt a nation or territory was.
