Elon Musk FINALLY In PREP For 33-Engine Test Fire!

To launch its enormous Starship into space for the first time, SpaceX is getting ever-closer.

Elon Musk’s company SpaceX intends to execute an orbital test flight as soon as February or March following a series of high-altitude testing and landing attempts using Starship prototypes.

In an effort to get toward that test flight, SpaceX achieved a major milestone this week. And so, what is the final preparation and when will it happen? Let’s find out!

NASA chose SpaceX’s reusable Starship vehicle as the human landing system for the Artemis mission, which will return astronauts to the moon by 2025. Before Starship can launch astronauts to the moon, however, there is still more work to be done.

At SpaceX’s Starbase site on the South Texas coast, work and testing on the almost 400-foot-tall Starship and Super Heavy rocket launcher have been ongoing.

The company claimed to have finished Starship’s first full wet dress rehearsal, which involved supplying Starship and the rocket with more than 10 million pounds of fuel.

According to a tweet from SpaceX on January 23, “Today’s test will help verify a full launch countdown sequence, as well as the performance of Starship and the orbital pad for flight-like operations.”

The biggest rocket ever constructed was disassembled on January 25 by a tower the size of a skyscraper that was powered by two enormous mechanical arms. The spaceship and its 50-meter-tall second stage were delicately pulled off of Super Heavy Booster 7 by the arms as they cautiously grasped Starship utilizing hard points under its flaps. The robot, dubbed “Mechazilla,” dropped the 220,000+ lb (100 tons) vehicle hundreds of feet onto a waiting stand before releasing. Ship 24 was returned to SpaceX’s Starbase, Texas, factory on January 26 for final adjustments.

Starbase’s donut-shaped orbital launch mount, which employs clamps and umbilicals to hold Starship in place and powers, fuels, and pressurizes Super Heavy, still had Booster 7 attached to it. The next time Booster 7 dismounts from that launch mount, it should be able to do so autonomously. But first, SpaceX needs to make sure that this incredible force can be contained (and survived).

Unfortunately, this is not the first time this story has been told. Throughout the past 18 months, SpaceX has frequently appeared to be on the verge of reaching the goal. For instance, CEO Elon Musk stated in September 2021 that Super Heavy Booster 4 will make an attempt at the first static fire on the orbital launch platform of Starbase later in the month. Even though it only used one of its 33 engines, Super Heavy Booster 7 delivered the OLM its first static fire test eleven months later.

In the months that followed that static fire, Booster 7 finished a second single-engine test, a second-engine test with two engines, a test with seven engines, a test with fourteen engines, and a lengthy test with eleven engines. The rocket and pad have not sustained any significant harm as a result of all of that cautious testing, which has been mostly successful.
