Elon Musk Just DENIED The Possibility Of Stealing Tesla Car In 10 Seconds!
A researcher demonstrated how a key card feature introduced by Tesla last year could be exploited to add an unauthorized key that allows hackers to open and start a vehicle. Wanna know more?

And let’s begin!

Tesla released an update last year that made it easier to start its vehicles after unlocking them with their NFC key cards. A researcher has now demonstrated how the feature can be used to steal cars.

So, what are NFC cards?

NFC cards, or near field communication cards, allow communication between two devices, such as a door lock and a card. The technology enables Tesla owners to unlock their vehicles using a card rather than a key.

Are Tesla cards NFC compatible?

NFC technology is used in Tesla’s access cards. Tesla intended for the cards to provide owners with an additional option for vehicle security. Owners can currently unlock their vehicles using an NFC card, a mobile phone app, or a key fob.

For years, drivers who used their Tesla NFC key card to unlock their vehicles had to place the card on the center console before they could start driving. Following the August update, drivers could operate their vehicles immediately after unlocking them with the card. The NFC card is one of three methods for unlocking a Tesla; the other two are a key fob and a phone app.

Martin Herfurt, an Austrian security researcher, instantly noticed something strange about the new feature: not only did it allow the car to start automatically 130 seconds after being unlocked with the NFC card, but it also put the car in a state to accept entirely new keys, with no authentication required and no indication given by the in-car display.

“The authorization given in the 130-second interval is too broad… [it’s] not just for driving,” Herfurt explained in an online interview. “Tesla introduced this timer… to make the use of the NFC card as the primary means of using the car more convenient. What should happen is that the car can be started and driven without the user having to use the key card a second time. The problem is that within the 130-second period, not only the driving of the car but also the enrolling of a new key is authorized.”

Despite the fact that the official Tesla phone app does not allow keys to be enrolled unless they are linked to the owner’s account, Herfurt discovered that the vehicle happily exchanges messages with any Bluetooth Low Energy, or BLE, device that is nearby. As a result, the researcher created his own app, Teslakee, which speaks VCSec, the same language used by the official Tesla app to communicate with Tesla vehicles.

Herfurt created a malicious version of Teslakee for proof-of-concept purposes, demonstrating how simple it is for thieves to enroll their own key during the 130-second interval. (The researcher intends to release a benign version of Teslakee in the future, making such attacks more difficult to execute.) The attacker then uses the Teslakee app to exchange VCSec messages that enroll the new key.

All that is needed is to be within 130 feet of the car when it is unlocked with an NFC card. If a vehicle owner normally unlocks the car with the phone app—by far the most common method for Teslas—the attacker can force the use of the NFC card by using a signal jammer to block the BLE frequency used by Tesla’s phone-as-a-key app.
