Elon Musk Just EXPLAINED The US Navy's New Laser Weapon!

Advanced battery technology, such as that used in electric cars, is now being used to enhance the military’s laser weapons development efforts, according to the Defense Department. As lithium-ion batteries become smaller, cheaper, and more long-lasting, defense companies are capitalizing on the advancement by developing more efficient laser weapons. Lockheed Martin was awarded a contract for the development of an airborne high-power laser weapon system for a tactical fighter jet last week.

Tesla and other companies have achieved significant advances in car battery technology, which are now being used to assist the Pentagon in developing highpowered laser weapons that can destroy anything from hostile drones to missiles.

A contract awarded to Lockheed Martin last week by the Air Force Research Laboratory for the development of high-power fiber lasers that will be tested on a tactical fighter jet by 2021 is one example of the laser weapons research now ongoing. The fighter jet demonstration project is a component of the Air Force lab’s SHiELD (Self-protect High Energy Laser Demonstrator) programme, which stands for Self-protect High Energy Laser Demonstrator.

“You can power the laser from a battery system in the same way that you can power a car,” said Rob Afzal, senior fellow of laser weapon systems at
Lockheed Martin, the nation’s largest defence contractor. Because of the
necessity to transmit a large amount of energy in a short period of time, “we’d employ the same type of battery technology,” says the researcher.
It is true that the highly efficient lithium-ion battery technology that is typically used in electric cars is now being used to power power production and storage systems for military laser applications. A laser can achieve large bursts of energy in a short period of time, allowing it to incinerate enemy objects in the same way that a Tesla Model S driver can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a matter of seconds.

In the future, Afzal predicts that as batteries become smaller, cheaper, have greater power density, and are more reliable, “we will just have better
power systems for the laser.” In comparison to laser weapon technology,
battery technology is far more advanced.

Others credit Tesla with assisting in the advancement of electric vehicles and lithium-ion battery technology, as well as driving down the cost of batteries and expanding the power storage market outside the automotive industry, according to some experts. Despite this, the Tesla brand competes with other lithium-ion battery producers, and a study conducted by the research firm Technavio last year anticipated that China would exceed the United States in research and development investment on laser systems by 2022.

According to Richard Bagnell, programme manager of the Air Force lab’s SHiELD, “It’s funny how much of what happened in the car business can filter over into new capabilities in most other technologies, and lasers are one of them.” Goure, a former Pentagon official who is now senior vice president of the Lexington Institute, a Virginia think tank, said the Lockheed contract to create a laser for a fighter plane demonstrates how far research has progressed in terms of shrinking laser weapons in size and weight.

According to a press release, Lockheed’s team will be “dedicated to the
development of a compact, high-efficiency laser within tough size, weight, and power restrictions” starting this month. Also stated in the document is that the laser system will be “pod mounted on the tactical fighter jet.”
