Elon Musk’s request to test brain chips on humans was denied by US regulators several times. But recently, the refusal has never before been made public.
The decision was sent to Neuralink along with a long list of issues that need to be resolved by the company before human testing, which is a crucial step toward ultimate product approval, according to the staff. And for whatever reasons, it seems that every time Elon Musk wants to do something grand, it always ends up fighting with the rules! Elon Musk is well-known for his high-profile firms such as Tesla and SpaceX, but the billionaire also has a few strange ventures. He stated that he began one of them in order to create “symbiosis” between the human brain and artificial intelligence.
Musk’s neural-interface technology firm is called Neuralink. It is creating a device that would be implanted in a person’s brain that would record and perhaps stimulate brain activity. Musk has described the technology to a “FitBit in your skull.”
While Musk likes to boast about his futuristic vision for the technology, it does have some possible near-term medicinal applications.
In 2016, Musk secretly launched Neuralink.
The Wall Street Journal’s 2017 article revealing Neuralink’s existence was the first time it was made widely known.
The company’s first significant public appearance didn’t happen until 2019, when Musk and other executives from Neuralink demonstrated their technology in a livestreamed presentation.
Neuralink is creating two distinct units of technology. The first option entails implanting a chip with electrodes into someone’s skull and directing them into their brain.
The chip Neuralink is developing is roughly the size of a penny and would be implanted in a person’s skull. An array of tiny wires, each nearly 20 times thinner than a human hair, fan out from the chip into the patient’s brain.
The cables are outfitted with 1,024 electrodes that can monitor brain activity and, theoretically, electrically stimulate the brain. This data is wirelessly transmitted by the chip to computers, where researchers can analyse it.
The second is a robot that could implant the chip automatically.
The robot would operate similarly to a sewing machine by employing a stiff needle to poke the flexible wires emerging from a Neuralink chip into a person’s brain.
In January 2021, Neuralink produced a video demonstrating the robot.
Musk claims that the machine will make implanting the Neuralink electrodes as simple as LASIK eye surgery. While this is an audacious claim, neuroscientists previously told Insider in 2019 that the machine has several very intriguing characteristics.
Andrew Hires, a neurologist at the University of Southern California, highlighted an ability that would automatically alter the needle to compensate for a patient’s brain movement during surgery, since the brain moves along with a person’s breathing and heartbeat during operation.
The robot is presently eight feet tall, and its design was created by Woke Studios while Neuralink is developing its underlying technology.
