Elon Musk Just HUMILIATED Jeff Bezos Again With SpaceX Lunar Lander!

Blue Origin filed a 50-page filing plus more than 100 pages of attachments with the Government Accountability Office, alleging that the SpaceX was improperly favoured in the deliberations that led to this month’s single-source award.
Blue Origin had competed for a share of the space agency funding to develop a system capable of landing astronauts on the moon in the mid-2020s, with Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and Draper as partners. Dynetics, based in Alabama, was also a competitor and has filed a protest with the GAO.
Due to the importance of promoting competition in the lunar lander market, both protests contend that the space agency was wrong to award only one contract, despite Congress’ lower-than-expected support levels. Many of the claims made in a document explaining its selection process are also contested by both protests. Blue Origin, for example, claims that seeking advance payments for development work was incorrectly assumed.
Despite the fact that both protests go into great detail about procurement, Blue Origin’s challenge has a personal element to it. Over the last decade, Bezos and Elon Musk have had numerous spats over their competing space programmes, with Elon Musk usually coming out on top. In 2013, SpaceX, not Blue Origin, was granted permission to use Kennedy Space Centre’s historic Launch Pad 39A. Blue Origin’s attempt to patent the procedure for landing a rocket at sea was rejected by SpaceX two years later. Blue Origin also lost out to SpaceX and United Launch Alliance in a multibillion-dollar competition for US Space Force rocket development support last year
Following this week’s protest, the GAO will have 100 days to consider whether this contract award should be reversed. And, if history is any indication, the decision will stand, though the fact that SpaceX revised its contract bid following confidential discussions with the agency may complicate matters.
Blue Origin CEO Bob Smith told The New York Times, “We didn’t get a chance to revise, and that’s fundamentally unfair.”
The space agency said it couldn’t comment on the protests by Blue Origin and Dynetics “due to pending litigation” in response to GeekWire’s inquiry. GeekWire’s email inquiries to SpaceX and Blue Origin were not immediately answered.
Elon Musk, on the other hand, twisted the knife a little on Twitter, pointing out that Blue Origin has yet to launch a rocket into orbit, using a phrase with sexual overtones. He wrote, “Can’t get it up (to orbit) lol.”
Elon Musk’s comments to The Washington Post went into greater detail about Blue Origin’s protest. He was referring to Blue Origin’s request for $6 billion to develop its lunar lander.
“The BO bid was just way too high,” Elon Musk said, using Blue Origin’s initials to refer to the company. “Double that, and SpaceX has made a lot more hardware progress.”
SpaceX’s Starship super-rocket is being considered modifying for use as a lunar lander. This week will see the next in a series of high-altitude tests of Starship prototypes in Texas.
