Elon Musk Just LEAKED An Aluminum-Ion Battery For 2026!
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has pledged to make significant changes to the way his business manufactures the batteries that power its stationary energy storage systems and electric automobiles. Exxon Mobil is currently asking customers about its enormous lithium deposit discovery in Arkansas as oil corporations attempt to expand into the mining of minerals for electric vehicle batteries. It is said that it has made lithium supply offers to Tesla and other companies. If accepted, the offers would allow the company to extract and distribute up to 100,000 tons of lithium annually in a method that is more environmentally friendly.
This might be a fantastic deal for Tesla because it will allow it to be eligible for the entire US$7,500 federal subsidy per new EV, which is being built a battery-grade lithium refinery on the Gulf Coast. The government mandates that a specific proportion of the components used to assemble the packs and make up the raw cell ingredients originate in the US. The subsidy is extended until 2032, when it expires, so theoretically Tesla might be eligible for extra federal funding if it purchases lithium from Exxon and refines it in Texas for the Cybertruck’s 4680 battery.
There may be a significant amount of lithium in the Arkansas plot that Exxon Mobil is investigating, enough to make battery packs for 50 million electric vehicles. Exxon further claims that because the metal will be produced from subterranean saltwater, its extraction may be more environmentally friendly than existing lithium deposit discoveries.
Exxon is currently debating whether to drill the extraction wells in the field where it has already invested US$100 million for exploration with partners, or go it alone. According to Exxon CEO Darren Woods at the company’s last quarterly call, dealing with “brine and extracting the lithium is very consistent with a lot of the things that we do in our refineries and chemical plants and, in fact, in some of our upstream operations.”
Exxon is said to have contacted other EV industry heavyweights besides Tesla, including Ford and VW, as well as its battery suppliers like Samsung and SK On, suggesting that it may have opted to extract lithium with partners as the price of the metal substantially declined this year.
Meanwhile, researchers from the Universities of Ulm and Freiburg reported they had developed new anodes for aluminum-ion batteries that significantly improved their performance. Lyten then announced the opening of its pilot battery factory for lithium-sulfur batteries in the United States. The future of battery-powered vehicles and energy storage may be impacted by both of these factors.
