What’s the truth about supersonic aircrafts?
You must have probably heard or read about supersonic aircraft but very few have seen the plane in operation today. The truth is, supersonic planes stopped flying almost a decade ago. The last one, “Concorde,” had its final flight in 2003. However, the good news is that supersonic aircraft are coming back! A lot of work has been going on to build a quiet and friendly version, and the unveiling is now near.
Supersonic aircraft are planes that fly faster than the speed of sound. The supersonic aircrafts produced in the past were characterized by sonic booms; they are the loud explosion-like sounds made when a plane flies faster than the speed of sound.
The damage effect of the sonic boom is startling to people who hear it, and the explosion-like sound cracks a window glass of a house, which is why the supersonic airliner restricted the supersonic speeds when flying over a residential area or near coastlines. The current international regulation also limits the speed to Mach 1 to avoid the disturbance of sonic booms over a residential area. However, the sound was one of the significant factors that caused the discontinuation of supersonic aircraft.
But the good news is that the incoming NASA X-59 supersonic aircraft is coming according to Musk, with a quiet sound, unlike the previous ones known for their explosion-like bang. The new supersonic aircraft can reduce the loudness of the sonic boom that comes when an aircraft flies faster than the speed of sound. It is going to be implemented with a gentle and quiet sonic thump.

The new NASA X-59 supersonic aircraft is the latest series of the X-1 supersonic plane, which in 1947 became the first aircraft to fly faster than the speed of sound. The X-1 today still holds the world’s record for the fastest flight, which it set at Mach 6.7 in 1967, Musk stated.

It was piloted by Captain Chuck Yeager of the United States Air Force over the Mojave Desert in California.
