Elon Musk has hinted that Tesla will produce a “highly configurable Robovan” for transporting both passengers and goods. The comment was made after the CEO of Tesla announced that the company would produce an electric vehicle specifically designed to function as a “robotaxi.”
It has been quite some time since Tesla has introduced a brand-new motor vehicle.
Musk stated earlier this year in a product roadmap update that the primary focus for Tesla in 2022 will be to increase production of the Model Y and Model 3 at its existing factory. He also stated that the automaker has no plans to unveil new vehicles or bring to production previously unveiled products that haven’t made it to market yet, such as the Cybertruck.
Musk, on the other hand, has promised “a massive wave of new Tesla products” in the year 2023. It is anticipated that one of them will be “a new electric vehicle with a futuristic appearance that will be used as a ‘dedicated robotaxi. ”
Although Tesla’s CEO made the announcement regarding the new vehicle program at the company’s Cyber Rodeo event earlier this year. In a tweet today, Elon Musk discussed the possibility of Tesla producing “a highly configurable Robovan”:
Since he mentioned that it would transport both people and cargo, it is unclear whether this would be the robotaxi or a separate vehicle program. However, he did mention that it would transport both. There have been numerous discussions regarding the possibility of Tesla producing an electric van or another type of vehicle that can carry a greater number of passengers. It was actually mentioned in Musk’s Tesla Master Plan Part 2, and it is still the only vehicle from that plan that the automaker has not yet introduced to the public even though it is part of the plan.
It has been rumored that Tesla is working on such a vehicle for use in The Boring Company’s Loop system. This system uses Tesla vehicles to move people in tunnels underneath cities, with the first application currently being deployed in Las Vegas. Tesla is also rumored to be working on such a vehicle for its own use.
In addition, Musk stated that a Tesla electric van is on the way as soon as there are sufficient batteries available to manufacture it in volume without having a negative impact on the automaker’s other vehicle programs. This statement was made in the previous year.
Tesla has been placing a significant amount of stock in its new 4680 battery cell format, but the company has not provided a definitive time frame for when this will take place. It is currently gearing up to construct those cells in Berlin, while simultaneously stepping up production of those cells in Texas.
A number of cell suppliers are also investing in the production of 4680 cells so that they can supply Tesla with batteries. Greater availability is anticipated in the year 2023; however, the actual high volume, which is anticipated to be in the hundreds of gigawatt-hours, is more likely to arrive in the year 2024.
