The ‘evil twin’ of Earth has been dubbed Venus. the planet whose beginnings were eerily similar to Earth’s eventually turned out to be oh very flawed. Despite the proximity and similarity of the two planets’ sizes, Venus’ atmosphere is the most dissimilar to Earth’s as it can be. This has been happening as a result of a seemingly unstoppable greenhouse effect for however long. Venus’s surface reaches temperatures of 864 degrees Fahrenheit (462 degrees Celsius), which is hotter than Mercury’s. Over 0.5 miles or a kilometer underwater would be the equivalent of the surface pressure. Unique difficulties arise from that dense atmosphere.
Sulfuric acid, which is utilized in lead acid batteries and as an industrial cleanser, is the main component of its clouds. Furthermore, you must endure atmospheric entry, where friction can heat you to 11,000 degrees Celsius. The Americans placed a person on the Moon, but they never made an attempt to land a real spacecraft on Venus. In the end, the Soviets would repeat it five times.
Let’s go all the way back to 1967. The Soviets came to a fork in the road as the year came to a close. Eleven rockets are sent to Venus. eleven failures That was the record for Venera 4. The Venera project’s goal was to set down a probe on the surface of Venus (Venera is the Russian word for Venus). The Soviets sought to surpass the Americans in the ongoing space race by penetrating Venus’s atmosphere. The American government planned to deploy a flyby probe to Venus in late 1967.
And now, let’s take a closer look on how did the Soviets make this happen!
For the Soviets, the time was now or never. The Venera mission was handed off to the aerospace corporation Lavochkin when Venera 3 was unable to land. The launch window for Venera 4 was scheduled to open in the fall of 1967. The Venera weighed a lot. It was 3.5 meters tall, or 11 feet. Its bottom lander essentially consisted of a number of instruments and a battery that had been compressed and had a parachute attached.
Having successfully launched its lander, Venera 4 arrived to Venus in October 1967. The mother ship released it as the probe entered the atmosphere over the planet.
The entrance force was 450G and the temperature was 11,000 degrees. As the atmosphere was being studied, the onboard instruments started to send information back. 102 degrees Fahrenheit or 39 degrees Celsius was the first temperature that was recorded. Similar to Earth, there was a similar atmospheric pressure. However, both metrics started to rise. They continued to rise. Quickly. 10 atmosphere.
