Elon Musk Just UNVEILED A New Battery Tech: Lithium-CO2 Battery
Recent years have seen an increase in interest in and use of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. They became the preferred option in many industries, including electric transportation and stationary energy storage, because to their greater fire safety, longer life, and cheaper cost. LFP has recently been favoured by automakers including Tesla, Ford, and Volkswagen.
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, promoted the LFP battery technology, which is dominated by Chinese manufacturers, declaring in March that “the vast majority of the heavy lifting for electrification will be iron-based cells,” according to Automotive News Europe.
According to Fortune Business Insights, the global LFP battery industry is expected to increase from $10 billion in 2021 to $50 billion by 2028.
According to the IEA, LFP batteries currently make up over 30% of all EV batteries, with more than 90% of batteries being produced in China.
According to First Phosphate CEO John Passalacqua, the sector could experience negative effects as early as 2026 due to a phosphate shortage, one of the essential components of the LFP battery.

The goal of electrifying transportation and energy storage while achieving net-zero emissions has recently placed a strong emphasis on obtaining the vital raw minerals like lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper, and aluminium that are required to meet these objectives.
However, one important mineral—phosphate—has been disregarded by governments, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), battery producers, and the metals and mining sector.
Nearly half of the world’s electric vehicle (EV) batteries are made of lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP), which is the ‘p’ in the battery’s name. Likewise it is a crucial component of the fertilizer and animal feed used to create the food and cattle that the world’s population is dependent upon to survive.
With a greater push to reach EV consumption goals, the push-pull between the two consumer groups is expected to intensify. An impending systemic pinch point is caused by the type of phosphate that is accessible and the quantities that are needed.
This is due to the fact that around 90% of the present phosphate production is utilized to make fertilizers, almost all of which undergo a purification procedure to produce Merchant Grade Acid (MGA), which is appropriate for fertilizer and animal feed. However, only about 10% of sedimentary feedstock can be refined to create purified phosphoric acid (PPA), which is utilized in batteries for electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
There is plenty of phosphate rock available; it’s simply the incorrect kind.
Sedimentary rock reserves are widely distributed in Mexico, Morocco, Algeria, China, and Jordan.
However, igneous feedstock, of which 90% can be scaled up to generate PPA, is what battery producers need. About 5% of the phosphate in the globe is found in this igneous form; the remainder is found in sedimentary rock. Additionally, only the finest 1% of that 5% is igneous anorthosite, which can produce significant volumes of PPA of the LFP battery grade because it is free of heavy metals and has a low sulphur concentration.
