According to a Politico article, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has been nominated by Norwegian Member of Parliament Marius Nilsen for the Nobel Peace Prize based on Musk’s continuous support for free speech, global connectivity, and unwavering support for dialogue. Nilsen emphasized the accomplishments made by Musk through his tech businesses, such as Tesla and X, which have worked to advance global communication and better society. Do you pay attention to the news? If so, you know how frightening the outside world may be. All around the world, there are conflicts and fighting. It can occur between individuals in the same country as well as between nations. The reasons differ. There is one constant, though: every year, wars claim a great number of lives.
Nonetheless, some individuals and organizations strive to put an end to wars. They make an effort to establish and maintain peace. On occasion, peace is facilitated by institutions such as the United Nations. This laborious task is occasionally carried out by people in a country’s government.
A unique prize may be given to an individual who makes significant contributions to the cause of peace. This award, known as the Nobel Peace Prize, is granted to a single person every year. The award is granted for efforts that eliminate standing armies, foster international peace, or establish peace organizations.
Every year, five Nobel Prizes are given out. They are as follows: Nobel Prize for Peace, Nobel Prize for Physics, Nobel Prize for Chemistry, Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, and Nobel Prize for Literature.
Alfred Nobel was a Swedish chemist and businessman who founded the Nobel Prizes in the 19th century. Despite having more than 300 patents under his belt, he was most known for creating dynamite by combining nitroglycerine with a substance that increased the explosive’s stability.
In the armaments sector as well as in the mining and building industries, dynamite quickly gained popularity. It greatly increased Nobel’s wealth. It might have also caused him to consider his legacy, since he decided toward the end of his life to utilize his enormous wealth to support annual prizes given “to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.”
Five years after his passing, in 1901, the first Nobel Prizes were awarded. In 1968, Sweden’s central bank established a sixth award in economics. Though Nobel purists point out that the Economics Prize is not technically a Nobel prize, it is always awarded alongside the others.
The Nobel Prizes convey an air of being above the political fray, only concerned with the betterment of humanity. However, there are allegations that the peace and literature awards, in particular, are politicized. Critics wonder if the judges’ political inclinations were taken into consideration when choosing the winners, or if the selected entries were indeed exceptional.
