Mercury, the planet that bears the name of the swift messenger god of the Roman pantheon (Hermes in the ancient Greek pantheon), is the “speed freak” of our Solar System. Likewise Mercury has a distinct set of properties and conditions that have shaped its history up to the present day, just like all of our other planet neighbors. Recently, scientists are still unsure of why Mercury is not the only object in its orbit. Join us as we take a closer look at the planet that is nearest to the Sun.

It is difficult to single out a single person who can claim credit for discovering Mercury, as it is with the “discovery” of the majority of natural phenomena. The primary explanation for this is that Mercury is one of the five inner rocky planets that can be observed without a telescope or binoculars.
Mercury, on the other hand, tends not to wander very far from the Sun (from our perspective on Earth), making it a little “trickier” to discover than other planets. This makes it more difficult to notice in the sky and likely indicates that it was discovered later than the other five planets, such as Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, or Venus.
The fact that anyone may have seen it at any time by just gazing up at the night sky gives us great confidence in its visibility. The question “who was the first to record their observations of Mercury?” could be a better one to ask because of this.
The Sumerians might have been the first, based on what we know now. The planet had been around since 3000 BC, according to their archives. The planet Nabu was revered as a god of literacy and education by the ancient Babylonians. Mercury was once mistakenly believed to be two planets by the ancient Greeks, however they came to understand that it was just one object in the fourth century BCE. Fast-forward a few millennia, and the great Copernicus created his Sun-centered solar system model, which was published in 1543 and unmistakably demonstrated that Mercury was a planet.
Gallileo, who passed away in 1642, is credited with becoming the first person to directly examine the planet using a telescope. He offered the first “proof,” so to speak, that Mercury was indeed a different planet in the 17th century. Venus emerged and vanished at regular intervals on either side of the Sun, which indicated to him that Venus must be orbiting the Sun.
What makes Mercury so unique?
The smallest and closest planet to the Sun is Mercury, which is also the smallest planet in our solar system. It has a diameter of roughly 3,031 miles (4,879.4 km), which is somewhat greater than the width of the United States, and is just marginally bigger than the Earth’s moon. A massive asteroid is also believed to have struck Mercury around 4 billion years ago. It actually managed to survive the hit, saving the Earth from destruction.
It is believed that the asteroid that struck Mercury was 60 miles wide (99.5 km) and left a 960-mile (1,545-km) broad crater that is today known as the Caloris Basin. It’s a huge impact.
In order to put that into perspective, consider that the asteroid that is believed to have wiped off the dinosaurs was around 6.2 miles (10 km) broad.
