Elon Musk Reveals Huge Updates On Ships 25 And 26 In Boca Chica!
Elon Musk claims that SpaceX’s Starship has a “decent chance” of making it on its next flight. “If the engines start and the ship doesn’t blow up…” I believe there is a good chance that we will reach orbit,” he says. However, SpaceX’s plans for a second launch of its Starship megarocket could be pushed back even further because the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) is starting to look into how the launch could affect the environment and pose a threat to protected species in the Boca Chica region. In a keynote lecture on Thursday (Oct. 5) at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Baku, Azerbaijan, Elon Musk presented Starship, a massive SpaceX reusable rocket system aiming for a new near-orbital mission in the very near future.
Musk remarked in a video interview with moderator and Voyager Space chief revenue officer Clay Mowry that SpaceX did not want to “set expectations too high” following an explosive orbital attempt in April. Among other problems, the two stages of Starship failed to separate; SpaceX eventually exploded the vehicle high above the Gulf of Mexico on purpose. Musk, 52, ultimately aims to use Starship to transport people to the moon and Mars, continuing his decades-long objective with SpaceX, which he established in 2002.
Starship and its Super Heavy booster are the most powerful rocket system ever made. They have almost twice as much liftoff thrust as NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, which was made for the Artemis program. Until Starship is ready for flights, SLS is the the most powerful launcher that can be used.
But Starship has a big date coming up: NASA wants them to land the Artemis 3 crew on the moon in 2025 or 2026. This will be the first time humans have tried to do this since Apollo 17 in 1972.
NASA officials have said more than once that they are keeping an eye on SpaceX’s work because of the delays in getting Starship ready over the past few months. In early August, Jim Free, who is the agency’s associate administrator of the exploration systems development mission office, said that SpaceX still has time to follow NASA’s Artemis 3 rules. However if they don’t, he said, the agency is ready to send Artemis 3 on a journey that doesn’t land and put off the landing on the moon until at least Artemis 4.
It’s unclear when Starship will fly again. As early as May, Musk said that the system would be ready for a new flight in “six to eight weeks.” His company also did interesting engine fires on Starship this summer to get ready for the next flight. However at the end of September, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warned that the legal steps needed to fix problems on the first flight were not yet finished.
The FAA has not yet given SpaceX a license for the second launch, even though the company said it had done all 57 things needed for the next flight and finished its probe. Reuters says that SpaceX also needs to get permission from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. But SpaceX will probably launch quickly once these important things are taken care of.
