Elon Musk Says “Build More Transformers!”

The shortage of chips may be over, but Elon Musk predicts that the world will have shortages of transformers and electricity in 2025 due to the rapid expansion of EVs and AI. “I’ve never seen any technology advance faster than this,” states Musk.

Elon Musk has voiced concerns about the potential effects of artificial intelligence (AI) on transformer supply and electricity due to its rapid growth.

Elon Musk underlined the critical need for the sector to prioritize renewable energy generation and boost electrical transformer production in order to quell the supply issue, which he said would occur next year, in a Q&A session that concluded the Bosch Connected World conference.

The tech tycoon mentioned how AI technology is developing quickly and how electric vehicles are becoming more commonplace, pointing out that this is an unparalleled rate of progress.

The demand for AI-related technology is greater than it has ever been, according to the CEO of Tesla, who likened the rate of technical growth to historical gold rushes.

“The artificial intelligence computing coming online appears to be increasing by a factor of 10 every six months. Like, obviously that cannot continue at such a high rate forever, or it’ll exceed the mass of the universe, but I’ve never seen anything like it. The chip rush is bigger than any gold rush that’s ever existed,” Musk told in a report.

“I think we really are on the edge of probably the biggest technology revolution that has ever existed,” he stated.

Musk acknowledged the possible risks connected to AI, but he stated that he would rather see the advancements personally than stay away from them.

“You know, there’s supposedly a Chinese curse: ‘May you live in interesting times.’ Well, we live in the most interesting of times,” Musk said.

“For a while, it was making me a bit depressed, frankly. I was like, ‘Well, will they take over? Will we be useless?’ But the way I reconciled myself to this question was: Would I rather be alive to see the AI apocalypse or not? I’m like, I guess I’d like to see this. It’s not gonna be boring,” he said.

Elon Musk addressed the particular difficulties brought forth by the growing AI infrastructure by pointing out the foreseeable limitations on AI computing resources.

He drew attention to the lack of neural net chips that had occurred during the previous year and forecast that voltage step-down transformers, which are necessary to power AI systems, would be the next obstacle. Musk also mentioned how ironic it is that the AI systems require transformer power.

“My not-that-funny joke is that you need transformers to run transformers. You know, the AI is like… There’s this thing called a transformer in AI… I don’t know, it’s a combination of sort of neural nets… Anyway, they’re running out of transformers to run transformers,” he said.

“Then, the next shortage will be electricity. They won’t be able to find enough electricity to run all the chips. I think next year, you’ll see they just can’t find enough electricity to run all the chips,” he stated.

Musk stressed how AI and electric vehicles (EVs), which both depend significantly on electricity and voltage transformers, are related.
