A fire incident has occurred within a specific Tesla Megapack battery module that was installed at the Bouldercombe huge battery facility in Queensland. This incident has taken place during the ongoing commissioning procedure of the battery.
Based on official reports from the fire brigade and police, the ignition of the fire was initially observed around 7:45 PM on Tuesday evening, in accordance with the local time zone. It is important to note that the fire has been contained within a solitary Megapack 2.0 module.
The origin of the fire remains unclear; nonetheless, this event has reignited the ongoing debate over energy policies between the anti-renewable Coalition and the federal Labor government. Conservatives persist in capitalizing on any available chance to discredit technologies that pose a threat to coal.
Genex Power, the proprietor of the battery project, has officially acknowledged in a statement that an incident occurred on Tuesday night when one of the 40 Tesla Megapack 2.0 battery modules at its Bouldercombe battery project experienced a fire.
The occurrence was characterized as a “minor fire” and it was noted that the use of water, which is customary for fires of this nature, was not necessary. There have been no reported impacts on any other Megapack modules. According to the statement, the fire has been successfully extinguished and the location has been isolated from the grid.
Genex is collaborating with Tesla Motors Australia Pty Ltd and Consolidated Power Projects Pty Ltd to conduct an investigation into the underlying factors that led to the occurrence of the incident.
The Bouldercombe Battery project, with a capacity of 50MW and 100MWh, is currently in the last stages of its commissioning process. This battery installation, following the Wandoan project, is the second of its kind in the state. On Tuesday, the battery was observed to be functioning at nearly maximum capacity. The formal commissioning process was originally planned to be concluded by the end of October.
This incident marks a recurrence of fire-related occurrences with Tesla Megapack modules. In August 2021, two instances of destruction were seen during the construction of the 300MW/450MWh Victoria Big Battery. Subsequent investigations attributed the cause of these incidents to a liquid coolant leak. Likewise in 2022, another incident took place at the Moss Landing battery located in California.
