Many fictional works have speculated about possible alien life, but Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, is preparing for the actual thing.
SpaceX’s Starship aims to transport humans to the farthest reaches of the universe and beyond. this is the reason CEO Elon Musk is hell-bent on completing that task.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk expressed his desire to end his life on Mars in a March statement. “Just not on impact.”
Musk has been quite open about his desire to join the ranks of sentient beings from other planets. With that goal in mind, he constructed Starship, the most powerful rocket in the world.
“The reason it’s so gigantic is that if you’re on a long journey to Mars, I think being cooped up in something the size of a minivan would be unappealing to most people,” Musk stated back in October.
The approximately 400-foot-tall craft can effortlessly accommodate a hundred-person crew in addition to the millions of tons of materials and machinery needed to construct an autonomous metropolis on the Red Planet and beyond.
Depending on regulatory difficulties, Musk estimated in October that an unmanned Starship mission may reach Mars within the next three to four years. Upon completion of the fuel transfer process, he said, Starship should be able to traverse the solar system.
According to a recent episode of Lex Fridman’s podcast, the millionaire has somewhat existentialistic, but far-off, motivations for going to Mars and beyond.
How dire is the existential threat?
Musk stated that the Sun is slowly but surely growing in size. In due time, it will cause Earth’s waters to boil, transforming the planet into a Venusian double, where “life like we know it is impossible.”
“If we do not become interplanetary and go beyond our solar system, annihilation of all life on Earth is a certainty,” Musk added. Potentially as short as 500 million years; that’s barely 10% more time than Earth has existed. The very existence of life on Earth would be predicated on the fact that its evolutionary process had only taken ten percent more time.
A very steady rate of expansion and contraction is observed in the Sun, as attested by NASA. Recorded history shows that the sun has been more active at certain times and less active at others. About five billion years from now, when the Sun’s energy reserves are depleted, the star will enlarge into a red giant and swallow up multiple planets.
