Elon Musk SLAMS GM’s Battery Fire Recall Fiasco!
Did you guys know General Motors will offer $6,000 to Chevy Bolt EV owners?
GM announced in June that the 2023 Chevy Bolt EV and EUV are getting a significant price cut of $6000. It was kind of surprising because most automakers are raising the prices of their electric vehicles.
The Bolt EV and EUV, on the other hand, were in a strange situation after the major setback of recalling virtually all vehicles ever produced due to a battery fire risk coming from a defect in the battery cells supplied by LG Energy Solutions.
GM ended up doing the right thing and replaced the battery modules in all cars. However, the automaker has been delaying the decision to recall the electric vehicles and pushing “software fixes” in the time being and has been criticized for this. During that time, various vehicles ended up going up in flames. Tesla owner Elon Musk also slammed its competitor, General Motors.

This certainly didn’t help sales, but the Bolt EV and EUV were still a good offering at that price point with now good batteries. According to recent reports, the price drop of $6,000 made them the best value EVs in America, without a doubt. Many existing Bolt EV owners have been bummed out by the price reduction, which had to go through the recall and missed out on the lower price. GM is now offering rebates of up to $6,000 to those owners. It has been sending emails to owners to see if they are eligible. But the fingerprints of the rebate agreement come with an interesting section that includes not taking legal action against GM over “battery defect or recall”. While the whole experience has been unsatisfying for some Bolt EV owners, the GM ended up doing the right thing. In this case, people should take the money at this point. Any legal action would not result in a greater compensation than up to $6,000, so people should take this deal because it is a good one.

Currently, Tesla’s electric cars are the most selling cars in the United States as compared to any other company, and they hold over 60% of the U.S market share. It seems unlikely that Tesla will be seized anytime soon with a lead like that. But CEO of General Motors, Mary Barra took a further risk on a bold challenge to Musk earlier this week. She said that, by 2025, General Motors will be the most selling electric vehicle company in the whole U.S.
In October 2021, Barra first predicted to CNBC by replying “absolutely” when somebody asked her if she thinks GM can catch up to Tesla by the middle of this decade.
Tesla does not report the numbers of sales only in the United States, but they report their sales globally. However, Cos Automotive estimated that Tesla sold 352,471 cars to American drivers last year, which is about 14 times more than GM’s Chevrolet brand. According to CNBC, Chevrolet finished the year with fewer than 25,000 electric vehicles sold after a recall due to battery fire risks and paused production and just tracked third behind Tesla and Ford in U.S. sales. The largest goal of GM is the prediction to sell only zero-emission vehicles by 2035.
