According to Musk, the sun can power all of civilization as a “free fusion reactor in the sky.” But, what if we could harness this solar power through SpaceX’s Starlink satellites? Elon Musk, the tech billionaire entrepreneur, is often associated with his electric car firm Tesla, his space exploration company SpaceX, or his controversial use of Twitter. Maybe all you know about him is that he’s one of the wealthiest individuals alive.
Starlink might be less well-known to you. With the help of an expanding constellation of private satellites circling above, Musk’s business seeks to provide internet access to virtually everyone on the planet.
Starlink’s development accelerated in 2021 following years of research at SpaceX. Starlink now counts more than 4,200 operational satellites orbiting above, almost two years and dozens of successful launches later.
Across all seven continents, Starlink provides service in more than a million sites worldwide. The nascent broadband provider is nevertheless confronted with a backlog of potential customers who are eager to get equipment and begin service.
Starlink has its share of controversies. First off, people in the scientific community are worried about how Starlink’s low-earth orbit satellites are beginning to affect people’s ability to see the night sky. Competitors in the satellite internet space, such as Viasat, HughesNet, and Amazon’s Project Kuiper, have also noted Starlink’s growth, which has led to regulatory disputes and efforts to restrain Musk. For instance, Dish has criticized Starlink and asserted that their satellite signals would be interfered with by 5G deployments in the 12GHz range. The Federal Communications Commission changed its judgment and cancelled Starlink’s subsidies in August 2022, over two years after the company received almost $885.5 million in grant money from the agency, citing the fact that the service “failed to meet program requirements.”
According to FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, “We cannot afford to subsidize endeavours that are not delivering the promised speeds or are not likely to meet program requirements.” She also stated that Starlink’s technology “has real promise.”
And so, what is Starlink?
Starlink, which is technically a branch of SpaceX, is also the name of the “constellation,” or expanding network, of orbiting satellites owned by the space transportation business. The creation of the network started in 2015, and the first test satellites were sent into orbit in 2018.
Since then, hundreds more Starlink satellites have been added to the constellation by SpaceX through numerous flights.
