Elon Musk UNVEILS An UPGRADED Mars Rocket

Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX, originally intended to take people to Mars and turn them into an extraterrestrial species. This goal might be achieved with the company’s Starship rocket program. But, first of all, SpaceX must upgrade the current Starship. And so, what is the new plan? Let’s find out!

While a modified version of Starship has been contracted by NASA for the Artemis III Moon landings, which are anticipated to take place in 2025, Musk has always defended the launch system, originally known as the Interplanetary Transport System, as a versatile spacecraft that could be used as a rapid point-to-point transportation system for Earth.

Now, NASA has revealed that it has chosen seven businesses through its Collaborations for Commercial Space Capabilities-2 initiative (CCSC-2), a Space Act Agreement that is not funded but offers NASA advice and technical know-how.

The US space agency described Starship in that release as a “transportation and in-space low-Earth orbit destination.”
A performer playing the violin in front of an audience while in microgravity was depicted in one of the artist renderings of Starship that SpaceX released back in 2018.

Future incarnations of the launch system may also serve as an orbital space tourism destination or a space amphitheatre for people traveling to Mars, as seen in the artwork, which indicated SpaceX’s ambitions for Starship to go beyond being a regular rocket.

Now, the space agency stated that “SpaceX is collaborating with NASA on an integrated low Earth orbit architecture to provide a growing portfolio of technology with near-term Dragon evolution and concurrent Starship development.” This was stated in the CCSC-2 initiative announcement from NASA.

The statement went on to say that the “this architecture includes Starship as a transportation and in-space low-Earth orbit destination element supported by Super Heavy, Dragon, and Starlink, and constituent capabilities including crew and cargo transportation, communications, and operational and ground support.”

With the International Space Station (ISS) anticipated to cease operations around 2030, NASA has been looking to the private sector to develop a number of low Earth orbit (LEO) orbiting stations. The space agency has given grants totaling $415 million to numerous private space station ventures, including the Orbital Reef station to Blue Origin and Sierra Space and the Starlab from Nanoracks.

The CCSC-2 project enables NASA to continue these efforts. In its report, the organization named the seven businesses that had been chosen through CCSC-2: Blue Origin, Northrop Grumman, Sierra Space, Special Aerospace Services, ThinkOrbital Inc., Vast Space LLC, and SpaceX.

Starship’s development

In order to make a human mission to Mars economically viable, SpaceX built Starship to be completely reusable. A total height of 394 feet (120 meters) is achieved by the entire launch system, which consists of the Super Heavy first stage booster and the Starship upper stage.

Because of the rocket’s 29.5-foot (9-meter) diameter and potential future capacity, the private space business claims it may potentially carry up to 100 passengers. For comparison, NASA’s Skylab station, which had a smaller diameter of 21.76 feet, has the biggest open interior volume to date.
