As a result of the space agency ceasing its cooperation with Russia and canceling its flights onboard Soyuz rockets, the Euclid telescope of the European Space Agency may fly on board a Falcon 9 rocket in 2023.
It was planned for the Euclid infrared space telescope to launch this year from the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. ESA has decided to cut its connections with the Russian space agency as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions that have since been put in place against its government. Along with ending its collaboration with Europe on Soyuz rocket launches from French Guiana, Roscosmos also pulled its 87 staff members away from the launch site. Euclid’s spacecraft flight on Russia’s Soyuz rocket was subsequently cancelled.
Europe started looking at other options for orbital flights, notably the American private space industry. According to SpaceNews, Mark Clampin, the head of NASA’s astrophysics division, suggested on Monday during a meeting of the agency’s Astrophysics Advisory Council that the ESA may launch its Euclid mission aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket in the middle to end of 2023.
Josef Aschbacher, the director general of ESA, stated that the organization is in early talks with SpaceX, a company owned by Elon Musk, about using its rockets to transport missions, in an interview with Reuters in August. SpaceX is “the more operational of them and certainly one of the back-ups launches we are looking at,” Aschbacher said. At the time, the ESA was comparing SpaceX to rockets supplied by either Japan or India.
The need to find alternatives to Russian rockets is not exclusive to the European Space Agency. In response to the international sanctions placed against its government, Russia cut off its supply of rocket engines to the United States in March. As a result, Northrop Grumman disclosed that it was collaborating with Firefly Aerospace to construct an entirely domestic rocket in order to do away with the requirement for Russian engines.
To transport its Cygnus spacecraft to the International Space Station for cargo missions, the company will still use SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rockets until the new rocket is ready. OneWeb, a British company, was also pressured to agree to a deal with SpaceX, a rival, and ISRO, an Indian space agency, for the six launches needed to put its first-generation internet satellites in orbit later this year after suspending its missions with Soyuz.
