Elon Musk WINS Space Force Contract Readies For BATTLE?
In recent years, SpaceX has proven itself as a key provider of national security launches for the United States, the company is looking to increase its share of the defence industry by introducing a new product line dubbed Starshield. Starshield was unveiled by SpaceX in a somewhat discreet manner before the end of 2022. The service provides defence and intelligence organizations with custom-built spacecraft, sensors, and secure communications capabilities by utilizing SpaceX’s investment in its Starlink network of broadband satellites. Along with other commercial participants, SpaceX is keeping an eye out for chances brought about by the “great-power competition” between the United States, China, and Russia. China is referred to as a “pacing challenge” in a document regarding the United States’ national defence policy that was published in October by the Pentagon. The document states that China threatens to outpace the United States in terms of defence and space capabilities. The Department of Defence plans to use private innovation in order to win this competition.
“The United States of America is home to the commercial space industry that is by a wide margin the most powerful anywhere in the world. Deputy Secretary of Defence Kathleen Hicks stated this on December 8 at an Aspen Security Forum in Washington. “The Chinese know that, and we are going to lean into that,” Hicks added. We are going to make sure that we maintain a tight working relationship with the business sector and that we make full use of the commercial space capability.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has shone a bright light on the space industry, particularly on the importance of imaging satellites and on Starlink, the satellite internet service offered by SpaceX. The system, which already has more than 3,000 satellites in orbit and will add thousands more in the near future, has shown that it is resistant to interference and has illustrated the power of an architecture with a widespread distribution of nodes.
“This wasn’t available before,” John Plumb, assistant secretary of defence for space strategy, stated on December 14 at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies. He made the observation that the conflict in Ukraine is the first major conflict in which commercial space technology has been utilized to a substantial degree.
Plumb believes that incorporating commercial space into military activities is “the way to go” for the foreseeable future. “At this point, it should be pretty obvious that the department does not have to build its own constellation for each individual mission in order to implement resilience.”
In a memo dated November 21, Heidi Shyu, the undersecretary of defence for research and engineering, stated that the Pentagon expects a larger dependency on the space sector. She also asked the Defence Science Board to identify steps that the Department of Defence should take to ensure that it has access to commercial sources.
