This was the first instance of AI being utilized to operate a combat aircraft, with the VISTA being flown by an AI-driven autonomy agent for over seventeen hours. A combined team from the US Department of Defense (DoD) carried out 12 flight tests at Edwards AFB in December 2022 to hone advanced fighter maneuvers. This test flight was one of them.
Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the US Air Force Test Center, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) were among the organizations that provided support for the flying testing.
