As Neuralink begins its first clinical trial, the business said on Tuesday that recruitment for human volunteers has begun.
The FDA gave its approval for Neuralink, a tech company that Elon Musk owns and helped develop, to implant brain chips into people in May.
According to a blog post by Neuralink, the business also has a hospital site set up and Institutional Review Board approval, which will allow it to begin participant recruiting.
The brain-computer interface (BCI) was developed to enable people with paralysis to operate a computer mouse or keyboard just with their thoughts.
The six-year Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface (PRIME) project seeks to assess the safety of the implant and surgical robot as well as the general performance of the brain-computer interface software.
The R1 Robot will use surgery to implant the N1 Implant into a portion of the brain that governs movement intention in qualified volunteers. After being surgically implanted, the N1 Implant is designed to remotely record and send brain impulses to an app that can decode movement intention.
Neuralink posted a statement online saying, “We are pleased to inform that we have gotten approval from the evaluating independent institutional review board and our first hospital site to commence recruitment for our first-in-human clinical study.

What will the Neuralink study means?
According to Neuralink, when the R1 Robot medically inserts the implant, participants will be invited to utilize the N1 Implant and the N1 User App to control a computer and offer feedback on the system.
The Neuralink chip is implanted into the body in what way?
In order to embed the implant and its 1,024 electrodes for recording neural activity, which are attached to 64 ultra-thin, flexible linked threads, Neuralink has developed a surgical robot.
Optical coherence tomography is used by the robot’s five built-in camera systems to image the brain without using any harmful procedures. According to Neuralink, the robot puts the “threads exactly where they need to be” using a needle as fine as a human hair.
What exactly does the Neuralink brain chip do?
The end goal of Neuralink’s human studies is to ultimately allow a person with paralysis to operate a computer or phone using only their brain activity. The Neuralink 1 implant is actually made up of many processors, a wireless battery, and other electronics that are all hermetically sealed inside of a coin-sized device.
