The Juno spacecraft during its 43rd close encounter with Jupiter captured massive storms brewing near the planet’s North Pole. Using the JunoCam instrument, the probe snapped vortices of hurricane-like spiral wind patterns, churning on a surface that is bigger than what we see on Earth.
The American Space Agency, NASA claimed that the images clicked by the spacecraft show storms that could be over 50 kilometers in height and hundreds of kilometers across. Scientists are trying to understand the reasons why these storms take place on the planet, which is a riot of colors when seen from land and space-based telescopes on Earth.
They want to understand the various shapes, sizes, and colors that depend on the orientation of and spin along with the poles they form. They have been baffled at the cyclones, which spin counter-clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern, and anticyclones, which rotate clockwise in the northern hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the southern hemisphere, and exhibit very different colors and shapes.
Did you know that a storm has been swirling in Jupiter’s atmosphere?
Jupiter has a Great Red Spot, which is a massive storm that has been swirling for at least 150 years. According to the reports of NASA, the Red spot extends around five hundred kilometers beneath the cloud tops, where winds peak at around 650 kilometers per hour.
As far as the scales are concerned, it is big enough to fit an entire Earth inside of them. On July 10, 2017, a rare picture was taken of the Great Red Spot, when the spacecraft was about 13,840 kilometers above the cloud tops. Juno was launched into space from NASA’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on August 5, 2011. This spacecraft has been studying the planet’s magnetosphere, composition, and atmosphere ever since it entered the gas giant’s orbit in 2016. Astronomers were stunned to look at the results delivered by Juno, and since then Jupiter has emerged as a new subject of interest for astronomers.
The new era of its exploration will begin with the launch of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) JUICE mission.
There has been a recent development in studying the images released by the spacecraft. NASA has called for citizen scientists to spot and help in categorizing these storms and other atmospheric phenomena visible in Juno-Cam photos of Jupiter. According to the American space agency, “This process does not require specialized training or software, and can be done by anyone, anywhere, with a cell phone or laptop.” Juno has been continuing to go around the planet and its moon, examining it throughout.
In addition, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has also started science operations and even looked at the planets during its test phase. Besides, NASA released some images during the commissioning of the observatory, where JWST saw distinct bands that encircle the planet, as well as the Great Red Spot, a storm big enough to swallow the Earth.
