The electric vehicle firm Tesla, the space exploration endeavor SpaceX, and Elon Musk’s eventful use of Twitter are all names that may come to mind when reading about the billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. Perhaps all you know about him is that he is filthy rich.
You might not know as much about Starlink. Musk’s new company has ambitious plans to offer high-speed internet access to everyone on Earth via an ever-growing system of private satellites in Earth’s orbit.
However, research suggests that SpaceX is doing more than just launching Starlink satellites into space and providing internet to humans on Earth; it may also be leaking signals and making us visible to aliens. How true is this? Let’s find out n today’s episode!

In the last decade or two, thousands of satellites have been put into Earth orbit, and the next several years will see the launch of tens of thousands more. The majority of them will be part of “mega-constellations” like Starlink, which seek to provide coverage to every corner of the Earth.
The human race has relied on its connection to the universe for endless millennia, yet the spread of cities and the advent of artificial illumination have drastically decreased this connection. They are also creating difficulties for astronomers, which threatens our ability to comprehend the cosmos.
In this research accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters, it is discovered that Starlink satellites are also “leaking” radio frequencies that interfere with radio astronomy. They discovered that the satellite emissions were much brighter than any natural source in the sky, even in a so-called “radio quiet zone” in Western Australia’s outback.
The group from Curtin University employed radio telescopes in Western Australia to study satellite radio transmissions.
They discovered the expected radio emissions on Earth’s designated and licensed radio channels.
They did, however, discover signals at some very unanticipated frequencies as well.
Many different Starlink satellites were determined to be transmitting the signals. The signals seem to be coming from something electronic within the spacecraft.
What’s the big deal here? Radio telescopes are so sensitive that they can detect signals from far away, over several light years.
Even an extremely faint radio transmitter hundreds or thousands of kilometres away from the telescope seems as bright as the most powerful cosmic radio emitters we see in the sky. As a result, these signals pose a significant disruption.
In particular, the site in Western Australia where work has already begun on a portion of the largest radio observatory ever envisioned, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), is affected by the emissions. This endeavor has been ongoing for 30 years, will cost billions of dollars over the next decade, and involves participation from 16 different nations.
Massive time and money have been spent on finding remote locations for the SKA and other astronomy facilities. But satellites create a new hazard in orbit, which can’t be dodged.
