The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), a NASA project, served as the agency’s first planetary defence mission in 2022. A cosmic collision that was seen all across the earth.
As part of a historic test of humanity’s capacity to safeguard Earth from a potentially catastrophic collision with a space rock, a NASA spacecraft purposefully crashed into an asteroid.
The DART probe of the agency, which stands for Double Asteroid Redirection Test, performed the ground-breaking operation on the not harmful and small space asteroid known as Dimorphos, which is located around 6.8 million miles from Earth.
The $325 million mission was created to explore whether “nudging” an asteroid may change its trajectory, giving scientists a useful practical evaluation of planetary defence technology.
At 7:14 p.m. ET, a spacecraft roughly the size of a vending machine named DART collided head-on with the planet Dimorphos while travelling at 14,000 mph.
While DART was coming closer to the asteroid, a camera on board recorded live views of Dimorphos growing larger. The probe sent startling details of the sharp, uneven surface of the space rock in the moments before contact.
Elena Adams, a DART mission systems engineer at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, exclaimed, “Oh my goodness.”
As soon as the spacecraft’s signal faded, confirming that the probe had in fact reached its target shortly after sending its final photographs, cheers broke out.
In a message of congratulations to the DART team, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said that the multinational team of scientists’ work will aid in defending Earth from impending asteroids.
We’re demonstrating that planetary defence is a worldwide effort and that saving the planet is extremely likely to be successful, according to Nelson.
The objective is to reduce the asteroid’s almost 12-hour orbit down to a few minutes.
Even a slight deviation from an asteroid’s course in a real-world planetary defence scenario may prevent a catastrophic collision, assuming the object is still far enough away.
Dimorphos, an asteroid that is 525 feet broad, orbits Didymos, a much larger asteroid that is 2,500 feet tall. According to NASA, neither Dimorphos nor Didymos are a threat to Earth.
The DART spacecraft was put into orbit in November, and it travelled to its destination of an asteroid for ten months.
One didn’t anticipate the probe to survive the collision. A small satellite constructed in Italy that was launched as part of the mission was intended to travel within 25 to 50 miles of Dimorphos after the impact and take pictures.
