Tesla, Inc. (stylized as T☰SLA, formerly Tesla Motors) is an American automotive and energy storage company founded by Martin Eberhard, Marc Tarpenning, JB Straubel and Ian Wright, and based in Palo Alto, California.
Battery technology
Tesla Motors does not use large single-function batteries, but instead uses combined battery cells consisting of thousands of 18650 series lithium ion batteries. These batteries are small cylindrical shapes that are commonly found in laptops and other consumer electronics. The battery used by Tesla Motors is quite cheap to produce and lighter in weight. Tesla Motors has reduced the cost and weight of batteries by reducing the safety components in the batteries. According to him, this security component is redundant because one battery pack already has this security component. Currently, Panasonic is the sole supplier of this type of battery cells to Tesla Motors.
Tesla Motors’ electric car battery assembly costs are the cheapest in the world at only around 200 USD per kWh.
In the Tesla Model S, the battery is in the floor of the car, while in the Tesla Roadster the battery is behind the seat. This feature allows the Tesla Model S to have more space for goods and people. However, this feature has risks because the position of the battery close to the asphalt means the battery is likely to be damaged by asphalt debris or gravel. To prevent this, aluminum alloy metal plates are used as battery protectors. And the position of the battery in such a way makes replacing the battery easier and faster, it only takes 90 seconds.
Technology sharing
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on June 12, 2014 that the company would allow anyone to use its technology patents for good purposes. This announcement lacks legal interpretation and is not a formal license, so the definition of “good cause” requires further clarification. The agreement given is likely that the licensee will not file lawsuits regarding the patent against Tesla, or copy it directly. The main reason for releasing this patent is to attract and motivate engineers to accelerate the marketing and manufacture of electric cars for environmentally friendly transportation. However, intellectual property such as brands and trade secrets are still held by Tesla.
