ITS OVER! The Largest Ship In The World Has a GIANT Problem!
A gigantic container ship collided with Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge last March of this year, drawing attention to the demands that ever-increasing maritime vessels place on ports, waterways, and bridges.
And so, in today’s episode let’s find out the global impact of these massive shipping vessels in today’s current infrastructures, and in addition, let’s check out the top 10 largest container ships in the world.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge, a 47-year-old interstate traffic route that spans the Port of Baltimore, was struck by a cargo ship that lost power early on Tuesday morning. The entire building collapsed into the Patapsco River in a matter of seconds.
The massive ship was identified as Dali, and it was sailing toward Sri Lanka. It measured around 1,000 feet in length and 160 feet in width. The crew of the ship sent a distress signal to land when it lost power, giving authorities enough time to stop traffic on the bridge and prevent fatalities during the ensuing crash.
Although experts have pointed out that gigantic vessels like Dali would not have existed when the bridge originally opened, Baltimore’s bridge was “up to code” when it was constructed in 1977. Over the past 50 years, container ship sizes have increased dramatically, and the country’s infrastructure is currently struggling to keep up.
According to retired Rear Admiral Stash Pelkowski of SUNY Maritime College, “Worldwide, bigger ships means that when you have an incident, the negatives that come out of that incident are often expanded.”
Dali is a typical container ship, despite the appearance of being much larger. The worldwide standard for measuring a ship’s container capacity is 10,000 TEUs or 20-foot equivalent units. The term comes from the common freight containers that are 20 feet long.
In contrast, on March 8, Philadelphia received the CMA CGM Marco Polo, a ship with a container capacity of 16,000 TEUs, which was the largest vessel to visit the East Coast. Furthermore, the MSC Irina, the largest container ship in the world, is more than 1,300 feet in length and 200 feet in width. It can carry 24,000 TEUs.
The Dali, Marco Polo, and Irina when lined up end to end would be ten football fields in length. However, cargo ships weren’t always as large as they are now.
The first commercially successful container ship, named the SS Ideal X, sailed from Newark to Houston in April 1956. Measuring just 524 feet long and 30 feet wide, the ship could carry about 800 TEUs of cargo. The ship was built by North Carolina businessman and trucking tycoon Malcom McLean, who outfitted a decommissioned World War II T2 tanker with machinery to transport containers on deck. He considered it a huge chance to enhance shipping and long-distance trade. The Ideal X quickly proved to be a more economical and timely option, and port machinery like cranes adjusted to accommodate its dimensions.
Then the competition to build ever-bigger ships started. Cargo ships increased in size significantly with every decade that went by. The cargo capacity of ships has increased dramatically by 2,900 percent in less than 70 years, starting with the first cargo ship and ending with the largest today.
