NASA’s first mission focusing on Jupiter’s frozen moon Europa and if it may harbor conditions conducive to life was given a $178 million launch services contract to Elon Musk’s private rocket company SpaceX. NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida will serve as the launch site for the Europa Clipper mission, which is scheduled to launch in October 2024 on a Falcon Heavy rocket owned by Elon Musk’s company, Space Exploration Technologies Corp.(SpaceX).
The contract represented NASA’s most recent vote of confidence in the Hawthorne, California-based company, which has recently transported multiple people and cargo payloads to the International Space Station.
Likewise, for the planned Artemis program, which would send NASA astronauts back to the moon for the first time since 1972, SpaceX was given a $2.9 billion contract in April to develop the lunar lander vehicle.
However, that deal was put on hold after protests from two rival space firms, Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin and the defense contractor Dynetics Inc.
Currently the most potent operational space launch vehicle in the world, the company’s partially reusable 23-story Falcon Heavy sent its first commercial payload into orbit in 2019.
The businesses that might have submitted bids for the Europa Clipper launch contract were not disclosed by NASA.
The ice-covered Jovian satellite, which is slightly smaller than Earth’s moon and is a top contender in the search for life elsewhere in the solar system, will be thoroughly surveyed by the probe.
Researchers discovered in 2018 that a bend in Europa’s magnetic field noticed by NASA’s Galileo probe in 1997 believed to have been brought on by a geyser erupting through the icy crust of the moon from a massive underlying ocean. These results corroborated other Europa plume evidence.
According to NASA, the Clipper mission’s goals include taking high-resolution pictures of Europa’s surface, figuring out its makeup, searching for evidence of geological activity, measuring the thickness of its icy shell, and figuring out the depth and salinity of its ocean.
In addition to being the biggest and most massive planet in the solar system, Jupiter also has the most moons orbiting it, at 92, according to new research.
According to a recent article from Sky and Telescope, the Minor Planet Center (MPC), which is run by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, has published the orbits of the 12 hitherto unidentified moons of Jupiter.
The twelve additional moons represent a 15% increase in the number of moons currently known to exist on the planet. With the help of these new discoveries, Jupiter has surpassed Saturn to claim the title of “planet in the solar system with the most moons.”
Around the second-largest planet in the solar system, a ringed gas giant, researchers have discovered 83 moons thus far.
