SpaceX CLEARS FAA Starship OFT-2 Investigation: OFT-3 Ready To Go!
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States has concluded the investigation into the second flight of SpaceX’s massive Starship spacecraft, the agency announced this afternoon, February 26. What’s next for SpaceX’s Starship? Let’s all find out and all the latest updates happening in Starbase!

That test flight ended dramatically on November 18, shortly after it was launched from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in South Texas. There were two explosions that occurred, precisely 3.5 and 8 minutes after liftoff, respectively, as both of Starship’s stages exploded high above Earth.
Following its fast-paced “build, fly, and iterate” approach, SpaceX has been preparing for Starship mission number three ever since. However, the FAA emphasized that today’s announcement did not imply launch approval.
“Prior to the next launch, SpaceX must implement all corrective actions and receive a license modification from the FAA that addresses all safety, environmental, and other applicable regulatory requirements,” agency representatives stated in an email today.
“The FAA is evaluating SpaceX’s license modification request and expects SpaceX to submit additional required information before a final determination can be made,” they stated.
Seventeen corrective actions were found during the mishap investigation, which SpaceX headed and the FAA approved. The FAA’s emailed statement states that seven of them had to do with Starship’s massive Super Heavy first-stage booster, “including vehicle hardware redesigns, updated control system modeling, reevaluation of engine analyses based on OTF-2 [Orbital Flight Test-2] flight data and updated engine control algorithms.”
The remaining ten remedial measures address Starship, the vehicle’s 165-foot-tall (50-meter) upper stage. “Car hardware redesigns, operational changes, flammability analysis updates, installation of additional fire protection, and guidance and modeling updates” are some of these improvements, wrote FAA officials.
Built of stainless steel, the Starship is the largest and most powerful rocket in history. It is approximately 400 feet (122 meters) tall when stacked, and Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of SpaceX, predicts that future iterations will probably be significantly taller.
The business is creating a fully reusable vehicle to support human habitation on Mars and the moon, as well as a number of other ambitious exploration projects. NASA chose Starship to be the first crewed lunar lander as part of its Artemis moon program, therefore the agency has a stake in the vehicle’s performance.
In April 2023, Starship made its maiden flight. During that flight, the craft experienced several problems, including the inability of its two stages to separate as intended. About four minutes after liftoff, SpaceX exploded the falling craft.
On the second flight this past November, everything went considerably more smoothly. For example, Musk stated last month that if the upper stage had been carrying a cargo, it probably would have reached orbit.
