SpaceX REVEALS Newly MODIFIED Super Heavy Booster!
The most recent Starship rocket prototype, which is getting ready for a test flight in the near future, has received some new hardware from SpaceX. And that we will find out in today’s episode!

A massive first-stage launcher named Super Heavy and a 165-foot-tall (50 meters) upper-stage spacecraft called Starship make up SpaceX’s next-generation deep-space transportation system, known as Starship. Both components are totally reusable.
They have only ever flown together once so far, on a test flight on April 20 from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in South Texas that planned to take Starship halfway around the planet. That didn’t happen, though, as SpaceX beam up a self-destruct command, detonating the pair high above the Gulf of Mexico since Starship and Super Heavy failed to separate as intended.
In the wake of that premiere, SpaceX has made a number of design adjustments in an effort to improve the likelihood of success on further Starship flights.
The system for spacecraft separation has undergone the most significant alteration. On the upcoming Starship mission, which will use the Super Heavy prototype Booster 9 and an upper-stage spacecraft called Ship 25, everything will be very different. SpaceX recently offered us a sneak peek.
Starbase is putting the finishing touches on the forthcoming second Starship test flight, and Booster 9 is slated to return to the launch site in the coming days when its hot staging ring has been installed.
Starship and Super Heavy are being upgraded to use a separation technique called hot-staging, in which Starship’s second stage engines will ignite to push the ship away from the booster, the company wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that shared two images of the new hardware today (Aug. 18).
Musk revealed the design modification to journalist Ashlee Vance during an interview on X on June 24. “The superhot plasma from the upper-stage engines has gotta go somewhere,” Musk said. In order to allow the upper-stage engine plume to pass through the booster’s extension and not simply blow itself up, we are constructing a booster extension that is basically all vents.
According to Musk, hot staging, which is frequently employed on Russian rockets, may ultimately result in a 10% increase in the payload-to-orbit capability of Starship.
Also being prepped for flight are future vehicles. Long-term goals are also being worked on, and a former scrapped ship that has been converted as the newest test article for NASA’s Human Landing System has appeared is currently being used as evidence of this.
Following the rollback of Ship 25 to the “rocket garden” in the late evening of August 4 and early morning of August 5, Booster 9 was rolled back to the production site on the evening of August 7. Since that time, both units have stayed at the manufacturing facility to be ready for more on-pad testing and the subsequent second launch of the entire Starship system.
The installation of Booster 9’s hot staging ring is now finished, and it will return to the launch site in the upcoming days.
The likelihood that SpaceX will execute a second round of Spin Prime and Static Fire tests is indicated by the lengthy road restrictions that have been advertised for the coming week.
