SpaceX’s Booster 9 Rolled Out For FINAL Testing!

SpaceX is still preparing for the next test flight of its gigantic Starship rocket.

The company just sent Booster 9 — the most current prototype of Super Heavy, Starship’s huge first stage rocket — back to the orbital launch pad at its Starbase facility in South Texas “for additional preflight testing,” SpaceX tweeted through X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday (Aug. 22).

If everything goes as Elon Musk has planned, the testing won’t take very long. The CEO and founder of SpaceX responded to the company’s Booster 9 post, which included four images of the rocket in motion, by saying, “Next Starship launch soon.” When will Starship launch again? Here’s what we know!

SpaceX is creating the Starship, a next-generation deep-space transportation system, to carry passengers and goods to Mars, the moon, and other planets.

The vehicle is made up of two parts: Super Heavy and Starship, an upper-stage spacecraft that is 165 feet (50 meters) tall and totally reusable. The tallest rocket ever constructed, the Starship is 394 feet (120 meters) tall when fully stacked.

The vehicle has only ever flown once, during a test flight from Starbase on April 20 that was intended to send the Starship upper stage partway around the Earth with a splashdown planned in the Pacific Ocean close to Hawaii.

However, it didn’t progress nearly that far. About four minutes after liftoff, Starship was destroyed high over the Gulf of Mexico when the two stages failed to split as intended by SpaceX.

After the first test flight’s dramatic conclusion, SpaceX started preparing for the second test flight of Starship.

More than 1,000 design changes have been made to the vehicle by the business, according to Musk. The most significant change may be the switch to “hot staging,” which involves starting the upper stage of Starship’s engines before it has detached from the booster.

As part of this new plan, Booster 9 had to have a “vented interstage” and a heat shield installed on top of it to screen it from the upper-stage companion, a prototype named Ship 25, which was engulfed in flames. In a previous post on X, SpaceX displayed images of this equipment last week.

The installation was completed inside a Starbase assembly building. SpaceX had relocated Booster 9 from the orbital launch platform, where the vehicle had successfully completed a “static fire” engine test on August 6 – a crucial prelaunch test.

In order to conduct a follow-up static fire test to its pre-launch static fire test, SpaceX’s Super Heavy Booster 9 prototype has rolled out to the launch site. This comes about two weeks after the initial static fire effort, which was cut short after only half the anticipated length. In parallel, work is being done at Starbase to get Ship 25 ready for flight, which, subject to regulatory approval, might happen in the coming week or two.

Future vehicles are also being produced for Starship flights well into the following year. Likewise SpaceX is currently renovating its Starship manufacturing plant, which will alter the facility’s future appearance.

After being interrupted during an attempt on August 6, Booster 9 is back at the launch pad and prepared for a second attempt at its pre-launch static fire test.
