SpaceX’s Booster 9 SUCCESSFULLY Performed 2nd Static Fire Test!

Despite the fact that the next Starship mission may still be weeks away, SpaceX claims to have successfully test-fired the booster. Will SpaceX’s gigantic Starship fly soon? Stay tuned and let’s find out!

At at 1:35 p.m. Eastern on August 25, SpaceX conducted a static-fire test at its Starbase test facility in Boca Chica, Texas, using the Raptor engines in the Super Heavy rocket referred to as Booster 9. The “full duration” firing that SpaceX claimed to have carried out appeared to last between five and six seconds.

Two engines prematurely shut down, but according to a later statement from SpaceX, all 33 engines successfully fired. “Congratulations to SpaceX for reaching this important milestone!”

The performance was better than a prior test of the identical booster on August 6, though the corporation did not specify whether it was adequate for it to move forward with a launch attempt. Four of the Raptors shut down prematurely, bringing the test to an early conclusion after the engines had only run for less than three seconds.

It is most likely one of the last technical requirements to be met before SpaceX is prepared for a second integrated Starship/Super Heavy launch, if SpaceX is pleased with the test’s results. Four minutes after liftoff on April 20, the first attempt failed when six Raptor engines in the Super Heavy booster shut down, causing the spacecraft to lose control and crash.

But in order to launch a rocket, SpaceX must still get permission from the Federal Aviation Administration, which may require making changes to its Starship/Super Heavy launch license. The FAA still needs to accept the report that SpaceX submitted earlier this month into the April 20 mishap, as well as determine whether SpaceX has made the necessary changes before approving an updated license. The FAA has not provided a timeframe for that process, but experts in the field predict it may take several weeks.

Based on the results of the launch in April, the business has already made a number of adjustments to the launch vehicle and the pad. The Raptor plume damaged the pad and sent sand and debris up to 10 kilometres from the launch site. The pad now has a water deluge system to prevent this from happening again. The deluge system was utilized in the two most recent static-fire tests; however, a launch will be necessary to adequately verify the system’s efficacy. This is because the recent tests did not use the engines at full force.

A vent-equipped interstage ring has been added to the booster’s top. Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, described a “hot-staging” strategy in June, in which the Starship upper stage’s engines are lit while still attached to the Super Heavy rocket. This technique is intended to be accommodated by the aforementioned system. He asserted that doing so may boost the car’s performance by as much as 10%.

By making “well over a thousand” additional adjustments to the vehicle, the corporation, according to Musk, improved the likelihood that the upcoming launch will be successful, he claimed in June. “I believe there is a bigger likelihood than ever that this next flight will succeed and reach orbit. Perhaps 60%,” he suggested.
