The nearly six-month long mission to the space station was brought to an end by the splashdown in the Atlantic off Florida on Friday when four men returned to Earth in a SpaceX capsule.
Their return was postponed by Florida’s wet and windy weather. The three Americans and one Italian left the International Space Station, where they had lived since April, after SpaceX and NASA finally granted the go-ahead on Friday.
About five hours after the capsule was launched, it parachuted into the water near Jacksonville, Florida. Jessica Watkins, the first Black woman to complete a long-duration space mission, and Samantha Cristoforetti of the European Space Agency were aboard, along with NASA astronauts Kjell Lindgren, Bob Hines, and Jessica Watkins. They were replaced last week by SpaceX.

On the other hand, in order to get the International Space Station (ISS) out of harm’s way, a cargo ship connected to the station ran its engines for five minutes on Monday night (October 24).
A piece of a satellite that was destroyed in a Russian anti-satellite test in November 2021 was just avoided by the International Space Station (ISS) by taking evasive measures.
At 8:25 p.m. on October 24th, according to a NASA statement, the ISS crew fired the Progress 81’s thrusters for a total of five minutes and five seconds to steer clear of the debris fragment on October 24 at 00:25 EDT (00:25 GMT). Progress 81 is a Russian cargo ship linked to the station.
The “Pre-Determined Debris Avoidance Maneuver” (PDAM) was carried out, according to agency officials, to “give the complex an extra measure of distance away from the expected track” of the debris fragment.
According to NASA, the operation increased the ISS’s altitude by 0.8 miles at perigee, which is when it is closest to Earth, and by 0.2 miles at apogee, which is when it is farthest from Earth. Normal operations of the space station were unaffected by the thruster firing.
On Nov. 15, 2021, Russia tested a direct ascent anti-satellite (ASAT) missile, which is what caused the debris fragment that necessitated the avoidance maneuver. The missile was launched from the ground and obliterated the Cosmos 1408 spacecraft, a retired Soviet satellite that had been out of service since the 1980s.
Since then, the test has received considerable criticism from space agencies and space policy experts around the world, prompting astronauts on board the ISS to seek refuge.
The International Space Station has encountered debris from Russian ASAT tests before, so this is not a new occurrence. The space station performed a similar maneuver in June 2022 to steer clear of a Cosmos 1408 debris.
